Our Internet Presence, from Kelly at Bernard & Eimer Orthodontics
Drs. Bernard & Eimer have enhanced their ability to communicate with you through the internet. Ortho Sesame is interactive software that allows patients/parents to view their account and receive e-mail reminders of their next appointment. This also gives them the ability to either cancel or confirm their appointment or contact us through email Kelly@drsosbern.com or ortho1021@neo.rr.com. We are also on several networking sites, such as Facebook and YouTube. These sites allow patients to learn more about our office, including our quarterly contests which we post on Facebook.
We currently have a “Holiday Brace Friendly Recipe Contest” for the 2011 holiday season. Simply submit a brace friendly recipe to one of the e-mail addresses listed above. A winner will be chosen in December. Dr. Bernard writes interesting facts about orthodontics and articles for our Blog. You can also become a “fan or friend” of Drs. Bernard and Eimer and receive Wahoo’s. Our website, www.drsosbern.com, also contains information about our doctors, staff, and valuable information about treatment, along with emergency information. Please stop at the front desk and fill out a form with your e-mail address (you can submit several addresses) and give this to one of the receptionists so you can join us on the web!

Office Improvements
Please excuse our dust as we make some needed improvements on both floors of our office building.
The wallpaper on both long hall-ways on either side of the clinic is being replaced with faux painting; similar to the reception area. The tooth brushing area will be totally re-vamped with a new counter, sinks, mirror and lighting.
Downstairs, both patient bathrooms will be upgraded with new vanities, wallpaper and increased lighting. The work will not be done when patients are being seen so you will not have any interference with the regular office routine.
Thank you for your patience and understanding.
Happy Holidays!

Straightening Roots, from Bernard & Eimer Orthodontics
Most people know that braces straighten teeth, but few people know how important it is for the roots to be straight as well. The crowns of teeth are visible and making the crowns straight improves the bite and the appearance. But attached to every crown is a root which can be seen only on an x-ray.
But why do roots need to be straight? The orthodontists’ goal is to have all roots parallel to each other in the bone. When this is done, the crowns will look better and function better. Roots need to have healthy bone around them so the teeth will be stable and not move after braces. If they are touching other roots or the thick outer layer of bone, they can wear down or resorb.
Orthodontic treatment itself usually causes some root shortening or resorption.
However, this does not affect the stability and health of the tooth. Patients with braces can cause root shortening by not being consistent with rubber bands. Constant “jiggling” of teeth with nail biting can be a problem.
So when you think your teeth are straight and want your braces off, remember that the orthodontist has to straighten the roots before you are done.

How low do you go?
We all know that sugar causes tooth decay, but most of us don’t realize that it is really acid production from bacteria acting on the sugar that makes the hole in your tooth. If acid can make holes or erodes into the enamel, where else do we get acid on our teeth?
Soft drinks and sports drinks are high in acid and can eat into the enamel of your teeth. The acidity is measured by ph and the lower the ph value, the more acidic the drink is. If the ph is below 5.5, enamel will begin to dissolve!
Here’s a chart with the ph value for drinks that are consumed by the American public.

Healthy After School Snack Ideas for Patients with Braces
Fruit:
Make it easy to grab and go, cut, chop or slice fresh fruit to prevent loosening any of the braces. Store them in the refrigerator in easily accessible containers; store grapes in a large, open bowl in the fridge; or store in a bowl on the counter.
Baked Tortilla Chips and Salsa:
Consider serving low-fat refried or whole beans in addition to salsa. If you have time, make nachos by adding extras like melted reduced-fat cheese, diced tomatoes, green peppers, onion, low-fat sour cream, and guacamole.
Unsweetened Whole Grain Cereal and Low-Fat Milk:
Top with fresh fruit like blueberries, sliced bananas, or strawberries. Add dried fruit like cranberries.
Reduced-Fat or Light String Cheese:
This is a good source of protein and calcium, and a great accompaniment to any snack. Try serving with fruit, vegetables or whole grain crackers.
Fruit and Yogurt Smoothie:
You have many options, so be creative! Use low-fat vanilla or fruit flavored yogurt or frozen yogurt as the base. Blend in fresh or unsweetened frozen fruit. Throw in ice cubes, if needed, to reach the desired consistency. Remember not to chew on the ice cubes!! If this is too tempting, avoid adding them! You can add a splash of low-fat milk or 100% fruit juice, depending upon the desired flavor and consistency.
ENJOY YOUR AFTER SCHOOL SNACKS AND LET’S BE HEALTHY!!!

THE MAGIC AGE – “7”
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that all children be seen by an orthodontic specialist at age 7 (seven). That sounds very young but that is when the front teeth start to erupt and they may be crowded or erupt poorly.
Braces at that age are usually not needed unless the teeth erupt into a cross-bite or are extremely misaligned or don’t erupt at all. However, sometimes the orthodontist needs to have some baby teeth removed to ensure proper eruption of all front permanent teeth. The straighter they come in, the straighter they will stay in the future so if you have a child who is 7 (or over), make sure they see a Board eligible or Board Certified orthodontic specialist for an examination. We will welcome your call and your initial visit.

BRACES –SAFE HALLOWEEN TREATS
Smart snacking tips for adults and children with braces)
By the American Association of Orthodontists
What can I have that’s fun to eat for Halloween?
Orthodontists say it’s the perennial question from adults and children wearing braces.
Those who wear braces should avoid the following foods, whether consumed on their own or as recipe ingredients.
• Nuts
• Popcorn
• Tortilla chips
• Hard candy
• Jellybeans
• Licorice
• Taffy
• Caramel and other chewy candies
However, especially because October is National Orthodontic Health Month, orthodontists want to help their patients enjoy the season.
“A little awareness and creativity in the kitchen can produce big smiles from trick-or-treaters with braces.”

Braces-Friendly October Recipe!
Ingredients:
• 1 cup shortening
• 1 cup sugar
• 2 Tablespoons water
• 1 teaspoon vanilla
• 2 eggs
• 2 cups all-purpose flour
• ½ cup cocoa
• 1 teaspoon salt
• ½ teaspoon baking soda
Directions:
Using cocoa powder instead of melted baking chocolate is one of the secrets to baking soft cookies (another is using shortening instead of margarine or butter). If you’re looking for a change from brownies, this is a great melt-in-your-mouth alternative. In a large bowl, combine shortening, sugar, water, and vanilla, using an electric mixer and beating until smooth. Add eggs and mix until blended. Mix flour, cocoa, salt, and baking powder slowly into shortening mixture, using low then medium speed.
Drop by tablespoons onto ungreased cookie sheets. Bake 9 minutes at 375 degrees, makes about three dozen. Store cookies in a covered container to keep soft.

Talkin' rubber bands with Dr. Bernard
We call them “Elastics” and in Western Pennsylvania they call them “Gum Bands”. But whatever you call them everyone in braces wears them at some time and without them we have no good way to establish an ideal, stable, fit of the teeth.
Rubber bands normally go from teeth or wires on one jaw to teeth or wires on the other jaw. The orthodontist decides the direction needed to get the teeth to fit and the size and strength of the force needed. The ideal force to get the desired movement is determined by the doctor so do not “double-up” or wear different size rubber bands to get done faster. Rubber bands have larger diameters for longer distance and smaller diameters for short. The band material itself is thicker when more force is needed.
When rubber bands are attached, it takes 10 hours or more for the teeth to start moving. This is when the teeth may be sore. Once the teeth are moving, they will not be sore unless the rubber bands are stopped for over 30 minutes. Then it will take 10 hours to start them moving again and they may be sore (again!).
Some short, tight rubber bands may have to be removed to eat certain foods but most can be worn to eat and the chewing motion helps move the teeth. If they have to be removed for eating or brushing they should be re-inserted within the 30 minute time frame.
You need to know that if you cannot wear them full-time due to the need to wear mouthguards for several hours a day, your treatment time will be extended or you will finish with less than an ideal bite.
We now have “rainbow” or multi-colored rubber bands for a fashion statement but the goal is still 24/7 wear. They should be changed at least once daily and always have a pack with you in case they break or shoot across the room while away from home.

Back to school with Dr. Bernard
At Bernard and Eimer Orthodontics, we know a new school year brings a lot of stress for many kids. New classes, new teachers, new friends and new academic challenges can be overwhelming! That’s why we thought we’d provide a few steps for our patients to enjoy their time in school and succeed this upcoming school year!
• Get plenty of sleep every night. Eight hours is recommended.
• Eat a healthy breakfast as it’s the most important meal of the day.
• Pack a healthy lunch or make healthy choices when selecting your school lunch. Try to avoid the vending machine and limit your intake of junk food.
• Stay on top of your homework and reading assignments.
• Stay active. Limit the time in front of the TV or playing video games. Instead, try to get outside to get some exercise—go for a walk or ride your bike.
• Ask for help. When you are having a hard time understanding a concept, ask your teacher or your peers for guidance.
• Always have a positive attitude and a smile on your face!
We hope everyone has a productive and fun school year!

Dr. Bernard wants to know: what's on your fall reading list?
It's almost fall season, which means it's back to school time for most of our patients at Bernard & Eimer Orthodontics. Today, we wanted to remind all our patients about the importance of reading.
In addition to textbooks, it's always great to pick up a great novel or a comic book. Today, we thought we’d ask: What's on YOUR fall reading list? What are some of your all-time favorites?
Out of ideas for great fall reads? Ask us for suggestions, and our staff would be happy to provide a few suggestions. You may also ask a local librarian here in North Canton for some ideas or check out these fall reading ideas that we came across today, courtesy of Borders.
Happy reading! Be sure to share with us your fall picks or your all-time favorites on our Facebook page!

Are you wearing your mouthguard? From Dr. Bernard
With fall sports almost here for a lot of our patients at Bernard & Eimer Orthodontics, we thought today would be a great time to remind all our young athletes in treatment to take care of both their mouth and appliances while participating in sports – especially contact sports such as soccer and football – this fall.
One of the most important pieces of sports equipment you can wear on the field is a mouthguard. A well-fitted mouthguard, which we’re happy to provide, allows you to breathe and speak more clearly, in addition to protecting your mouth and braces. Only by using a mouth guard can kids with and without braces avoid serious sports injuries. The next time you’re in for a visit with Drs. Bernard & Eimer, we encourage you to ask us for a mouthguard! In addition, the American Association of Orthodontists has five quick tips for keeping kids safe during sport activities this fall.
• Wear a helmet
• Stretch before and after a game or practice
• Wear protective eyewear
• Wear a face shield to avoid scratched or bruised skin
• Be observant, even as a spectator
We hope you’re enjoying your summer, and invite you all to share your summer photos on our Facebook page!

Braces and your overall health
Everyone today wants that perfect, white, red carpet, smile. Appearance is becoming more important every day. We are in a culture that values straight teeth and many hiring and relationship decisions are based on facial balance and a great smile. But are we better off health-wise for having two years of braces or are we just getting a cosmetic improvement with no total health advantage?
We will discuss a few health benefits of orthodontics with the most important benefit last. The first benefit is MUSCLE BALANCE. When the bite is ideal, the muscles are in better balance and less likely to become overworked and sore. An ideal bite also prevents TOOTH MOBILITY which can happen when just one or a few teeth are in contact when teeth come together or move across each other. Teeth can actually be “knocked out” by uncorrected bites if the trauma occurs over a long period of time. TOOTH WEAR is caused by poor tooth relationships, especially excessive overlapping of the front teeth. Once teeth are worn down, they don’t function as well in biting or chewing and then have to be restored with metal or ceramic crowns.
The most important health benefit regards the heart and overall health of the body. PERIODONTAL DISEASE is caused by bacteria that build up in pockets of unhealthy gum tissue around the teeth. These bacteria release toxins that get into the blood stream and are transmitted to the heart and other organs of the body. Having straight teeth makes brushing and flossing easier and evens out the gum tissue so it can be stimulated and kept from forming the pockets that house bacteria.
People with straight teeth generally take care of them better than those with crooked teeth. This maintains the periodontal health and subsequently the whole body health. We all take care of a shiny new car better than we do a “beater” and the same goes for your teeth!
So enjoy the beautiful smile but rest assured that you are receiving significant whole-body health benefits from orthodontic treatment.

The importance of elastic wear, from Bernard & Eimer Orthodontics
At some point during treatment you may need to wear elastics (rubber bands), which exert force that creates pressure to move teeth. In order for the force to remain constant, elastics must be worn 24/7 and be changed every day (to keep elasticity). When elastics are not worn as instructed, treatment is prolonged.
IMPORTANT TIPS:
1. You are responsible for wearing elastics, and to wear them as instructed. Remove only when brushing teeth and flossing. It is recommended that you eat with your elastics in, if too difficult; remember to put back in after meals.
2. Make sure you carry extra bags of elastics with you, so that if one breaks you have a spare.
3. If you forget to wear your elastics, DO NOT double up, this may cause you to over correct-just wear as instructed.
4. Be sure to change on a regular basis, they loose their elasticity and do not apply the proper force to your teeth.
5. If elastics break frequently, or a hook breaks making it impossible for you to wear elastics-call the office immediately. Don’t wait until your next appointment. Waiting will prolong your treatment time.
6. Call the office if you are out of elastics or are running low and we will mail them out to you or you can stop by during business hours to pick a few packages up.

Oral hygiene tips, from Bernard & Eimer Orthodontics
Brushing and flossing after every meal and snack is the only way to prevent plaque build up, tooth decay, and gum disease. Especially during treatment your teeth will need extra care. Our goal is for you to have a beautiful healthy smile, with straight white teeth and in order for this to occur good hygiene is very important. Food and particles can be trapped by brackets, wires, bands and appliances, and this can make it difficult to keep your teeth clean. Using a waterpik is an additional way to clean teeth and gums. Here are a few tips to help with keeping your teeth clean and healthy:
1. Brush after every meal and snack
2. Floss daily to remove trapped food and particles
3. Rinse with a mouth wash to kill any bacteria
4. Brush with a fluoride toothpaste and a soft bristled tooth brush
5. Clean teeth with a proxabrush
6. Maintain regular check-ups with your general dentist

Summer dos and donts, from Bernard & Eimer Orthodontics
AVOID THESE:
SPORTS DRINKS: Gator Aid and Power Aid and even citric drinks like orange and lemon-aid are very acidic. They can erode the enamel of your front teeth and leave white mark or patches; especially in those with braces.
STICKY FOODS: Most sticky foods have a high sugar content and when they get stuck in the grooves of the teeth, they provide food for decay producing bacteria over a long period of time. Watch out for sticky dried fruits like raisins as well!
HARD CANDY: Sucking on hard candy will again keep sugar bathing the teeth for a lengthy period. And it you decide to bite on it, your wire will bend and your bracket will be knocked off.
PROLONGED GUM CHEWING: Chewing gum for long periods will cause the muscles of the jaws to tire and even go into spasm. The jaw joints could become painful or begin clicking as well and headaches can occur from stressed facial muscles.
HEAD HOLDING: Propping up your head with your hand or sleeping on your hands could force the jaw sideways out of the sockets causing clicking or pain in the jaw joints. Pressure against the cheeks could also cause the teeth to move inward resulting in crooked teeth or a narrower arch.
(Instead,)
TRY THESE:
WATER: Not very tasty but always the best liquid for hydration and health! If you must have soda or sports drinks, always use a straw so the liquid cannot get to your teeth.
VEGETABLES: If you must have foods with sugar, try vegetables. Carrots have sugar but do not stick to the teeth or cause decay. Just remember to cook them or cut them up into small pieces if you have braces.
SOFT CANDY: Actually, some believe that dark chocolate is a cavity preventative. Soft candy may contain a lot of sugar, but it is easily chewed and swallowed so the contact with the teeth is minimized over hard or sticky candy.
LIMITED GUM CHEWING: Chewing sugarless gum for 5 minutes after meals is actually good for the teeth. It promotes saliva which washes away plaque and neutralizes acid. And gum with xylitol will even keep plaque from adhering to the teeth and prevent decay.
GOOD POSTURE: Keeping the back straight and head upright will promote good muscle tone and balance in the head and neck. It will allow the jaw joints to rest comfortably in the sockets and eliminate muscle and joint pain.

Patriotic fun facts!
On Monday, Dr. Bernard, Dr. Eimer and team will be busy celebrating America's 235th birthday. And because we know our patients love fun facts, we thought we'd provide you with some fun facts about Independence Day! Have a great Fourth of July weekend everyone, and we'll see you next week!!
- Independence Day was first celebrated in Philadelphia on July 8, 1776.
- An estimated 2.5 million people lived in America in July 1776. Today, an estimated 309 million people reside in the United States.
- The major objection to being ruled by Britain was taxation without representation, which meant that people didn't want to be taxed by a government that did not represent them.
- In 1941, Congress declared 4th of July a federal legal holiday. It is one of the few federal holidays that have not been moved to the nearest Friday or Monday.
- The stars on the original American flag were arranged in a circle to ensure that all colonies were equal.
- America's mascot, the bald eagle, can achieve speeds of up to 200 miles per hour when making a predatory dive. During a normal flight, bald eagles can travel up to 30 miles per hour.
- The American flag patch is backwards on U.S. Army uniforms. The reason? The blue field on the flag (the part with the stars) faces forward to symbolize carrying the American flag into battle.

Summer FAQs with Dr. Bernard
It's almost summer, which means folks with braces are more active with sports and outside activities. There are some questions that many of our patients ask about taking care of teeth and braces during this very time.
1. How do I protect my braces and teeth when playing sports?
Ans.: You should always wear a mouthguard. With braces, we provide a mouthguard for all patients that covers the braces and protects the lips and checks and still allows the teeth to move.
2. What activities should I use a mouthguard for?
Ans.: All contact sports but also anything that could cause a fall or minor trauma such as rollerblading, rock and mountain climbing, mountain biking, and even regular biking (I broke a rib and punctured a lung riding alone on a paved road!).
3. What if my tooth gets knocked out of position?
Ans.: Call us immediately! (or your dentist). The tooth can be pushed back into the proper position if done right away. If you wait until tomorrow, it will have to be moved back with braces.
4. What if my tooth gets knocked out?
Ans.: Pick it up gently. (do not clean it off with anything). If dirty, gently rinse and put it into a glass of milk and call us or your dentist and we can put it back into the socket.
5. Should I take my retainer out to play sports?
Ans.: YES – and put your “custom” mouthguard in (made by us or your dentist) after braces are removed. Also remove your retainer while diving in a pool or swimming with waves or engaging in any activity that could cause it to be knocked out and lost.
Your teeth make your smile. Protect them and you can have a beautiful smile for a lifetime.

Are those rumors about swallowing bubble gum true?
Drs. Bernard & Eimer know the rumors going around – mostly among young people – that once you swallow a piece of chewing gum it will stake a claim and take up residency in your stomach for at least seven years! We really hate to take all the fun out of the mystery, but the truth is that chewing gum, when swallowed, will enter the stomach and move through the digestive system just like any other piece of food and leave the body long before seven years! So, if you ever have accidentally swallowed a piece of gum, there is no need to worry!
This being said, gum does not have any dietary benefits, so while it’s not harmful to swallow, you still want to avoid swallowing it. If you are a gum-chewer, make sure you chew sugarless gum, because gum with sugar can lead to cavities. Sugarless gum still has the same amount of flavor, but with less cavity causing ingredients. You see, when the bacterium in your mouth breaks down sugar, what’s left behind is acid. This acid eats away at the enamel coating of your teeth, causing holes that we call cavities. Cavities can lead to other long term mouth problems if they are not treated in time, so it is best to try and avoid overexposing your teeth to too many harmful substances!
Happy (sugar-free) gum chewing! From Drs. Bernard & Eimer and team.

Ask Drs. Bernard & Eimer: What's the deal with retainers?
If you recently completed treatment at Bernard & Eimer Orthodontics, we’d like to congratulate you! Now that your braces have been removed, Drs. Bernard or Eimer will provide—or have provided you—with retainers. After braces are removed, teeth can shift out of position if they are not stabilized. Retainers, however, provide the stabilization needed. They are designed to hold teeth in their corrected, ideal positions until the bones and gums adapt to the treatment changes. Wearing retainers exactly as instructed by Drs. Bernard or Eimer is the best insurance that the treatment improvements last for a lifetime. Here are some things to remember when you receive your retainers:
* Wear your retainers full time, until Drs. Bernard or Eimer instruct otherwise. Wearing your retainers at night ensures that your pearly whites won’t relapse.
* Take your retainers out when eating...and always put retainers in their case! (Most appliances are lost in school lunch rooms or restaurants.)
* Clean retainers thoroughly once a day with a toothbrush and only a small amount of toothpaste. Use warm but not hot water.
* When retainers are not in your mouth they should ALWAYS be in a retainer case.
* Retainers are breakable, so treat them with care. If retainers are lost or broken, give us a call immediately.
* Remove retainers when swimming or during any sporting activity in which the retainers could fall out and get broken or lost (cheerleading, basketball, etc.) or when you should be wearing a mouth guard (football, soccer, etc.).
We hope this helps! You can always contact our team by calling (330) 494-4310 if you have any questions!

April is National Facial Protection Month!
With spring here, many of our patients at Bernard & Eimer Orthodontics will once again pick up the ball, bring the bat out of seasonal retirement, and lace up their cleats to hit the fields for the return of spring sports! April is National Facial Protection Month, and during this time, Drs. Bernard & Eimer both urge our young athletes to play it safe when out on the field. According to the National Youth Sports Safety Foundation, children, high-school athletes and adults will have more than 5,000,000 teeth knocked out in sporting events this year.
Here are a few ways to ensure your mouth’s safety this spring, courtesy of our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists:
1. Wear mouth guards for contact sports such as baseball, softball, soccer and lacrosse.
2. Wear a helmet
3. Wear protective eyewear
4. Wear a face shield to avoid scratched or bruised skin
5. Be alert, even as a spectator
We hope that helps. Protective gear is vital for anyone engaging in tooth or mouth-threatening activities. If you have any further questions about any of these tips, please contact our office). Stay safe and have fun!

Our 20th Annual Theatre Party
Because we appreciate our patient families, for the twentieth year, the practice of Drs. Bernard and Eimer held a Theatre Party on the Sunday before President’s day. We send each patient two tickets for a day at the movies at the famed Palace Theatre in downtown Canton.
The patients can use the extra ticket to bring a friend and often parents have been known to get into the party; even without a ticket.
The ticket entitles the patient and a guest to a recent movie, a soft drink, and a box of popcorn. It’s the one day our practice allows the patients to enjoy popcorn although we keep our fingers crossed that no one bites on an un-popped kernel and damages their braces.
This year we showed the movie: “Despicable Me” and had over 300 patients and family members enjoy the event. Before the movie, the giant organ rises up and serenades the attendees for 15 minutes and then descends back into the pit in front of the stage. In past years, we have had over 1000 in attendance although the winter weather sometimes holds the crowd down.
We hope our patients realize that we appreciate their loyalty to our practice and this party is our way of saying “thank you” to the families that have chosen us to provide their orthodontic treatment.

Get to know your braces!
Should you need to call Bernard & Eimer Orthodontics in case you sustain any damage to your braces, we can help you more effectively if you can tell us exactly which piece is in trouble! Here’s a handy diagram and corresponding list of all the parts that make up your braces.
Elastic Tie: Tiny rubber band that fits around the bracket to hold the archwire in place.
Archwire: The main wire that acts as a track to guide the teeth along. It's changed periodically throughout treatment, as teeth move to their new positions.
Loop in Archwire: Frequently used for closing space left by an extraction. Many archwires don't have a loop.
Bracket: Small attachment that holds the archwire in place. Most often, a bracket is cemented directly onto the tooth's surface, eliminating the need for a band.
Headgear Tube: Round, hollow attachment on the back bands. The inner bow of the headgear fits into it.
Coil Spring: Fits between brackets and over archwire to open space between teeth.
Tie Wire: Fine wire that is twisted around the bracket to hold the archwire in place.
Band: A thin ring of metal fitted around a tooth and cemented in place. The band provides a way to attach the brackets to the tooth.
Hook: Welded or removable arm to which elastics (rubber bands) are attached.
Elastic (Rubber Band): Small rubber band that is hooked between different points on the appliance to provide pressure to move the teeth.
Hope this helps! Give us a call if you have any questions!

Drs. Bernard and Eimer & team, supporting National Children's Dental Health Month
At Bernard & Eimer Orthodontics, February is National Children's Dental Health Month. Each February for the past 61 years, the American Dental Association (ADA) has sponsored National Children's Dental Health Month to raise awareness about the importance of oral health. Developing good habits at an early age and scheduling regular dental visits helps children get a good start on a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums.
For kids wearing braces, brushing and flossing can become more difficult, requiring extra time and vigilance to remove food particles that accumulate on and between the teeth and in braces. If the health of your teeth is ignored during treatment with braces, the results can be significantly compromised. Drs. Bernard and Eimer are available and happy to explain why effective brushing and flossing is one of the most critical actions needed from patients during orthodontic treatment. Have you visited our North Canton, OH office? Give us a call and schedule a complimentary new-patient exam!
We also invite you to connect with us on Facebook!

Are you wearing your mouth guard?
At Bernard & Eimer Orthodontics, we know spring sports are just around the corner, and we would like to remind our young athletes in treatment to take care of both your mouth and appliances while participating in contact sports (and non-contact sports) as well this spring. Drs. Bernard & Eimer will tell you that only by using a mouth guard can kids with and without braces avoid serious sports injuries. And don't forget to ask us for a mouth guard - we will provide a mouth guard for anyone in active treatment!

Ask Dr. Bernard: Why are regular dental checkups so important during orthodontic treatment?
Thanks for the question. If you're brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing during your orthodontic treatment, that’s great! But, don’t forget that it’s also important to visit your general dentist every six months in addition to your visits to our North Canton office. Regular dental checkups are important for maintaining good oral health. Your dentist can:
• Check for problems that might not be seen or felt
• Detect cavities and early signs of decay
• Treat oral health problems early
• Show you how to properly brush and floss your teeth
During an oral exam the doctor will check the health of your mouth, teeth, gums, cheeks and tongue. Checkups will also include a thorough teeth cleaning and polishing. If you have not been to the dentist in the last six months, it’s definitely time to schedule an appointment! If you don't have a general dentist, just ask us - Drs. Bernard & Eimer know plenty of great dentists in the greater Canton area!
We hope you have a great weekend!

Drs. Bernard and Eimer know there are quite a few myths about orthodontists circulating around these days. Before you buy into those myths, they think you should get the facts! We came across a great site that helps set the record straight. Our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists have some excellent information on the myths and facts of orthodontics, check them out today!
